Femara and fertility treatments utilizing aromatase are shown to be significantly more impressive in women who have already failed with the use of traditional treatments: Clomid and Serophene, for example. In scientific studies, patients using Femara were capable to ovulate nine out of twelve months and of these twelve patients, three conceived while on the Femara.

Additional studies have shown that Femara and fertility are unmistakably linked. Let’s phiz it, getting pregnant is not always as easy as it sounds. As many
stories as you have heard about unplanned pregnancies, getting pregnant should

case or another and that most couples do not get pregnant the first month

1. Try a plan for sex

There are quite a few of them out there. A recipe for sex is basically a list
of days to have sex on to try to get pregnant. My personal favorite is having
sex on days 9, 11, 12, 14, & 16 of your pattern. Of course if you don’t have
a 28 day cycle this one probably won’t work for you. Another plan is having
sex every other day starting about day 10 of your cycle.

2. Try fertility

Fertility charting involves taking your temperature at the same time every
morning before getting out of bed. You also observe for signs of ovulation and
table your cervical mucous pattern. Charting can help determine if you are ovulating
and help you to pinpoint when ovulation is occurring.

3. Use ovulation intimation kits (OPKs)

You can buy ovulation prediction kits at your local pharmacy or you can find
them even cheaper if you purchase them online. A day or two before you ovulate,
your fullness produces a surge of luteinizing hormone, LH. OPKs work by detecting
this LH surge. Follow the directions that succeed with your kit to determine how
to read the test strips, what time of day to test, and also what day of your
cycle you should begin testing. OPKs cannot sustain ovulation, but they can
help you predict ovulation before it occurs. Used in combination with fertility
charting, they are very effective in determining ovulation.

Even infections and viral illnesses can precipitate problems getting pregnant. Your
doctor can work with you to come up with a plan for you to get pregnant.

Dental practice caused patient an uneven bite, suit claims

A Madison County man has filed suit against an Alton dental practice, alleging the dentists did not properly diagnose him with TMJ and performed a procedure that made his bite worse.

Gene Silveus claims he visited Humbert Road Dentistry on March 16, 2007, where dentists grinded down the teeth and crowns of the left side of his jaw, causing him to have an uneven and unbalanced bite.

In the suit filed March 6 in Madison County Circuit Court, Silveus claims Dr. Terry Ortman and Dr. Timothy Pranger improperly worked on his mouth, causing him to suffer acute and prolonged physical and mental pain and suffering.

They also failed to initially diagnose Silveus’ TMJ and bi-lateral click before they grinded on his teeth, the complaint says.

The two dentists failed to render dental services consistent with Silveus’ needs, failed to adequately evaluate his condition, failed to diagnose and treat him, failed to take a proper history before grinding on his teeth and failed to fully explain the procedure to him, the suit states.

“After assuming the care and treatment of plaintff, Gene Silveus, the defendant, Dr. Timothey Pranger, D.M.D., through his authorized agent, employee or partner, co-defendant Terry Ortman, D.D.S., committed battery against the plaintiff by intentionally grinding down his teeth and crowns on the left side of his jaw without plaintiff’s consent,” the suit states.

Silveus claims they also failed to properly equilibrate the left and right side of his teeth on the same day.

As a result, Silveus has incurred dental expenses, according to the complaint.

In the 13-count suit, Silveus is seeking a judgment in excess of $650,000, plus costs.

He is represented by Jeffrey A. Kopis of the Kopis Law Office in Belleville.

State bans sale of bankrupt firm’s travel insurance

A Southwest Florida travel agency says it long ago stopped selling insurance policies from a company under investigation by Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink.

According to the Department of Financial Services, Sink this week notified three travel agencies to stop selling insurance on behalf of Colorado-based Prime Travel Protection Services Inc. and any other unlicensed travel insurer. Prime Travel Protection Services Inc., run by Jerry Watson in Colorado, reportedly filed bankruptcy in January.

Sink issued legal notices to Palm Coast Travel of Lake Worth; Vacation Superstore Network Inc., DBA Best Price Cruises, of Port St. Lucie; and Legendary Journeys Inc. of Sarasota, charging they violated state law by selling insurance for Prime Travel, which is not licensed in Florida to sell insurance. The travel agencies have 21 days from the receipt of the notice to respond.

Reached by phone in Sarasota on Friday, Legendary Journeys Vice President Al Ferguson said his company hasn’t sold Prime Travel Protection policies in six months. “We were getting complaints regarding their repayment schedule for valid claims,” Ferguson said. State regulators were informed, Ferguson said.

Legendary Journeys has offices throughout Southwest Florida, including one in Fort Myers.

Sink’s office said other travel agencies are under investigation, and may be named for selling policies from insurers that aren’t state-licensed.

Travel insurance can protect consumers against costs from unforeseeable circumstances, including trip cancellation, early return and emergency medical needs. Sink advises consumers to get confirmation that the insurer providing travel insurance protection is licensed by the State of Florida (Office of Insurance Regulation) before purchasing the product.

A little guy with a big heart, Kyle.

Eight-year-old boys should never die. They should be forever running, chasing, playing, laughing.

They should be doing everything Kyle Roger did every day of his life, until the cancer in his brain finally overcame the spirit that pushed him to the very end Saturday morning.

Two years ago, I went to write a story on a little 6-year-old from Bellingham who wanted to meet Washington quarterback Jake Locker. At the time, Locker had yet to play a college game, but he was happy to accommodate a Huskies family from his hometown.

Turns out, that was a day to treasure. Locker was tremendous, a gentle soul willing to run around the turf at Husky Stadium playing catch, allowing Kyle to chase and tackle him, walking out of the tunnel hand-in-hand with Kyle and his brother, Nicolas, just like a pregame ritual, eventually finding out where Kyle sat in the stands on Saturdays and promising to point to his new friend the first time he scored a touchdown in a real game.

Locker was pure gold. But Kyle? This kid was the real star.

You’d never have known such a bright little boy was sick, that an insidious, inoperable cancer called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma was already weaving its way into his brainstem.

Kyle Roger had something special. An unpretentious spirit. A contagious enthusiasm. A natural ease uncommon for a child his age, or for most people, come to think of it.

This was a youngster who months later, at another visit to a UW practice, walked up to the intimidating Tyrone Willingham, stuck his hand out to introduce himself and then asked if it was OK if he could play with his quarterback.

That’s just the way he was. Happy to see you. Happy to be alive. And it was a spirit that touched everyone who met him.

“Whether he knew it or not, he was somebody I looked up to,” Locker said Sunday, a day after learning of his young friend’s death. “He was only 6 or 7 years old, but just how he went about living his life and how he treated people, he had a huge impact on me. He was somebody I really admired and respected.

“It doesn’t seem fair that a kid like him with such a great attitude and with so much life ahead should be cut short like that. It’s hard to wrap your head around why stuff like that happens.”

Locker formed a bond with Kyle from that first meeting and kept in touch. The two got together when the family came to Seattle for medical treatments. Locker played video games with the youngster, went to lunch, hung out whenever possible.

Six months after their initial meeting, Locker lived up to his promise, pointing up at Kyle after scoring his first Husky Stadium touchdown on a run against Boise State. And for more than a year, things seemed to be going amazingly well for the little fellow with the big heart.

His mom, Christin Willhite Roger, had one goal. She wanted her son to experience all of life he could in whatever time he had.

One of the first things was meeting Locker. But it didn’t end there. The family took Kyle to Disneyland and Hawaii. Went skiing, rode horses, swam with dolphins. Became Lucky Dawg for a day at a Huskies game, going out to midfield for the coin toss with the team captains.

In between school and vacations came constant trips for radiation and chemotherapy and MRIs of the brain to measure the disease’s progress, the kind of reality checks that stuck in the minds of everyone watching this family’s delicate journey.

After almost two years, Kyle’s body could no longer take the endless treatments and his “brain bump” as he called it, began returning at a rapid rate.

Unchecked, cancer can be quick and cruel. This past Christmas break, Kyle walked away from his elementary school in Bellingham on his own power. A few days later, he was in a wheelchair. He started losing his hearing, his sight, his muscle control.

There are many other Olive Garden secret recipes, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, which can be prepared and cooked in less than half-an-hour. I’m not much of a cook - in the past, my cooking exploits are limited to instant noodles with eggs - but these recipes are clear and simple to follow. I’ll admit that my first attempts at these recipes should have been done under supervision, but I learned from my mistakes.

After some practice, I am now able to identify the Olive Garden Restaurant recipes within my skill level. A good number of these are vegetarian dishes. I have more than enough chances to eat the more complicated recipes at Mom’s and Sis’ place. Of course, when the family doesn’t feel like cleaning up, we still spend the two hour drive and wait at the nearest restaurant. The main difference I see in the meals is the presentation. The OG chefs can turn even their pasta into works of art, whereas Mom’s cooking (of the same pasta) look sort of pedestrian. Sanyo RL4930 (Sprint) Review

Now that Sprint has absorbed Nextel, the carrier’s Ready Link phones seem to be suffering from an identity crisis. Before the merger, the handsets were sort of Nextel-lite. You could get push-to-talk service and a rugged handset, but you didn’t have to lug around a brick, totally devoid of style, and you didn’t have to be chained to Nextel’s businesscentric services. But now that Nextel and Sprint have joined forces, and Nextel is putting out smaller, more attractive phones, Sprint’s Ready Link handsets just look a little ridiculous. Take the new Sanyo RL4930: Although it is on the bulky side, as well as sports rubber edges and PTT capability, we’d rather go with the real thing and just get a Nextel phone, such as the i355. The RL4930 is $189, but it’s cheaper with a service plan.

To be perfectly frank, the Sanyo RL4930 is not a looker. A dull candy bar shape, along with a basic-gray color scheme and a protruding antenna, makes it more like a cordless phone than a mobile device. Also, considering it measures 4.5 by 2 by 1 inches and weighs 4.4 ounces, it’s not compact by any means. On the upside, a rubber coating on either spine adds a touch of durability, but the extendable antenna is rather flimsy.

The Sanyo RL4930’s 65,000-color display measures 1.6 inches (128×112 pixels) and is the best thing about the handset’s design. Although its overall resolution is a bit washed out, it’s nonetheless fine for viewing the user-friendly menus. You can adjust the contrast, the font size, and the backlighting time, but you can’t alter the brightness.

Below the Sanyo RL4930’s display are the main navigation controls with a standard Sanyo design. There’s a five-way toggle that acts as a shortcut to messaging, and the phone book has a menu where you can program more shortcuts, as well as a My Content folder for storing games and other downloaded files. The toggle is large enough, but the other navigation controls may trouble users with larger fingers. Two soft keys, dedicated Web and Back buttons, and the Talk and End/power keys are all much too small. However, we liked the fact that the Back buttons double as a key lock if held down and that there’s a dedicated speakerphone button below the keypad. Speaking of the keypad, the buttons are raised just above the surface of the phone, which made it easy to dial by feel. They’re also decently sized and lit by a green backlighting. The only controls on the outside of the phone are the Ready Link button and a wide volume rocker on the left spine.

Classic cars worth $106,000 stolen in Loudon County

Three vintage cars with a combined value of more than $106,000 were stolen early Thursday morning from a classic car lot in Loudon County, authorities said.

The break-in at Smoky Mountain Traders, 11840 U.S. Highway 321, took place about 5 a.m. when a group of thieves disabled the gate and drove the vehicles off the lot, according to Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Detective Charlie Cosner.

“It took about a minute or less,” Cosner said.

The cars were described as an orange and white 1972 Pontiac GTO Judge convertible, a red and black 1971 Chevelle Super Sport convertible, and a red and white 1972 Super Sport Chevelle, said business owner Keith Bledsoe.

“I’m sure they loaded them into an enclosed car trailer after they drove them off,” Bledsoe said. “I’m hoping that someone was on U.S. 321 (Thursday) morning and saw something.”

Bledsoe said he used to build houses for a living but decided to open the car lot in May when the construction industry slowed. “I put my life savings into these old cars,” he said.

Bledsoe said he was able to determine the time of the break-in using a security camera but it was too early to say whether the camera’s images will be useful in identifying the three suspects.

He is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the cars and the convictions of those responsible for the thefts.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to the Sheriff’s Office at 865-986-4823 or the business at 865-988-8088.

Five Simple Steps To Weight Loss Success

If you are like most people, you have probably started numerous weight loss programs. You were serious. You were determined. You pushed through the pain. That is, until a couple weeks later when you just up and quit. It’s the standard operating procedure of millions of people.

The problem is most people dive in head first without putting enough thought and planning into their personal program. You see, there is no single “Perfect Plan” that will work for everyone. Nor is there a magic formula that will work for every person every time. The ideal weight loss program for you is one designed for you by you. You need to develop a program around your likes, wants and needs.

The following are five simple steps to take when developing a weight loss program for yourself. By taking a couple of hours to pre-plan your program, you can drastically increase your chances of decreasing your waistline.

Step One – Taking Stock

The first thing you need to do is ask yourself what you are trying to accomplish. Only then can you plan an appropriate program. Are you looking to lose fat? Maybe you want to concentrate of building some muscle. Quite possibly, you want to do both.

Determine what it is you want to accomplish and plan a program around activities that will work toward this new goal. However, only choose activities that you like to do. For example, running is probably the best exercise to help you burn fat. Even so, if you abhor the concept of jogging, do not make running the cornerstone of your weight loss program as you won’t do it.

Remember – your objective is to develop a program of activities you enjoy that will move you toward your goal. This is not about what is “best” or “most effective.” What is best and most effective are the activities you will do on a consistent basis. You can work in the other activities later when your new routine becomes habit.

Step Two – Setting Realistic Goals

Now that you have taken stock and picked your activities, set up a plan that you will stick to. If you have decided to run, but have not jogged around the block since middle school, do not start out trying to run twenty miles a week. You need to start slow. Your goal in the early stage is to set the habit, to make your new plan part of your everyday routine. Your subconscious will shut you down and turn you away from your goal if you try to do too much too soon.

Try this – for the first month do just one third of what you think you can do or twenty minutes, which ever is less. Do this no more than three times per week. This goes for cardio and weight lifting. Keep everything easy and light for the first month. After that, start inching up the length and intensity at intervals you find comfortable, yet challenging. Remember, you are not looking for some magic, quick loss plan to “lose thirty pounds in a month.” You have tried and failed at these “plans.” You are throwing the gimmicks out the window and setting out to slowly establish positive habits which you can build on as time goes by. There is no rush.

Step Three – Planning Ahead

Now that you have taken stock and set realistic goals, you need to plan. Literally write your workout into your day planner. Do the same with meals. If you are going to eat five meals a day, make time for those meals in your schedule. You won’t find the time unless you schedule it.

This is a must - Prepare your meals ahead of time. If you do not prepare your meals in advance you are setting yourself up for failure. If you take one thing away from this article, this is it. By not planning and preparing healthy meals in advance, you are planning for bad meals instead. You either plan for success or you plan for failure. It is that simple. Nothing will help your weight loss plan more than this simple “trick.”

Step Four – Tracking Your Work

So, you took stock, you set realistic goals and you planned ahead. You are now ready to begin your new weight loss journey in a successful manner. However, you are not done yet. The only way to fully prepare for the future is to understand the past.

Make sure you log every workout and every meal (Yes, I’m serious) in a daily planner of some sort. You should also note your mood before and after each work out and each meal. This way, whenever you have a very successful week or month, you can look back over that time period to see just what made it such a success. This is very powerful information to have because it isn’t second hand information, it is a recored history of what worked for you! Conversely, you can also use your written records to find out why a period was not successful.

Step Five – Revising and Re-Energizing!

Every month or two months, start back at step one to readdress the direction of your weight loss program. Use your written information to improve upon your success, limit your failures and to set more challenging goals for yourself.

These five steps are everything you need to create your own personalized weigh loss program. While it is outside the scope of this article to discuss specific exercises and diets, your success can be boiled down to how effectively you implement these five steps.

You should follow either of these 2 programs for 2 months. These will provide a slower weight loss rate than the Master Cleanse, but they’re more healthy to use for a long time straight. They should bring you closer to achieving your goal of losing 60 pounds in 3 months.

About 10 days before your 3 months are over, you should go on the Master Cleanse again to give your body the final push it needs to shed the last of those 60 pounds. If you do everything right, you have a good chance to lose 60 pounds in 3 months.

Components of Healthy Diet

The base of the pyramid is the “carbohydrate” component. Thus rice, pasta and cereal products should make up the bulk of our food intake. The next tier consists of “protein” products like meat, seafood and soy. Proteins should comprise a proportionately smaller component of our diets than the carbohydrates. The smallest contribution should be from the “fat” group as this is linked to the development bof obesity and heart disease. Vitamins and minerals are trace elements that are found in varying quantities in the various food substances.

More recently, healthy eating advisors advocate the minimum daily consumption of two pieces of fruit and two portions of vegetables. This is to ensure the intake of fiber is adequate for the regulation of bowel movements.

Reducing Fat Intake

Although meat products are primarily made of protein, the choice of cut can markedly affect the fat content. We can choose to reduce our fat intake by choosing lean cuts of meat and ctting off all visible fat prior to consumption. With poultry, the breast meat tends to have less fat than the thigh meat. However, the removal of the skin and visible fat allows us to continue to enjoy the thigh meat. Such small actions can have a drastic effect on our total fat intake and long-term health.

Use the Right Cooking Technique

In the same way, the way we cook the food also has marked effects on the eventual fat content. The use of deep-frying or shallow-frying techniques markedly increases the fat and calorie content compared to grilling or steaming.

I advocate the use of stir-frying with non-stick equipment (particularly frying pans and woks) and the use of minimal amounts of cooking oil.

Generally, 1 teaspoon of cooking oil is enough for each dish. Compare this with the numerous cookbooks that advocate the use of large amounts of oil to marinade the meat (to prevent sticking), followed by stir-frying with large volumes of oil or even deep-frying the meat before stir-frying!

• FOUR TYPES OF HEADACHES: The main types of headaches are tension, migraine, cluster and hormone.
Tension headaches, the most common, cause a band-like sensation or other pressure around the head. Most migraine headaches occur on one side of the head. Described as the most intense, cluster headaches attack in groups. Hormone headaches are associated with women’s menstrual cycles.

• OTHER TYPES OF HEADACHES: You might also experience over-medication rebound headaches, sinus headaches and those caused by brain abnormalities, including tumors.
• TRIGGERS: Stress, certain foods and sleeping patterns can trigger headaches.
“Eating meals regularly, staying well-hydrated and trying to minimize stress in life, sleeping well and getting exercise really do make a difference,” said Dr. Pamela Blake, a Houston neurologist at Memorial Hermann Northwest.

Changing weather that causes barometric pressure to spike or dip could be the culprit.

“When the fronts are coming in, primarily in the spring and fall, that will trigger headaches in the front of the head or face,”said Dr. Howard S. Derman, a neurologist at The Methodist Hospital. “People sometimes think those are sinus headaches because of spring flowers, but they’re really not.”

The same concept applies to people plagued with head pain while flying, hiking or mountain-climbing.

MUMBAI (AFP) — Indian technology giant Tata Consultancy announced on Thursday a sponsorship deal with Formula One team Ferrari, bucking predictions that the sport could collapse in the global economic crisis.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) will display its logo on Ferrari cars during the 2009 season, a company statement released in Mumbai said.

“TCS has entered into a historic agreement with Ferrari for an enhanced technology and marketing partnership,” it said, without giving financial details of the deal.

Last week Formula One agreed cost-cutting measures following a meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council in Monaco.

The sport’s governing body is clamping down on costs as it struggles to survive the global credit crisis.

Honda’s recent shock withdrawal from the Formula One raised fresh fears over the future of the multi-million dollar sport.

The head-turning Samsung Behold is a responsive touch-screen cell phone with a few advanced features and a great camera.

The 3G Samsung Behold ($150 from T-Mobile), the younger sibling of the Samsung Omnia on the Verizon network, is a slick cell phone with a bevy of advanced multimedia features and a responsive touch screen. However, the Behold lacks Wi-Fi and a standard headphone jack, and its Web browser is a bit counterintuitive.

Slightly smaller than the Omnia, the Behold measures 2.1 by 4.1 by 0.5 inches. Weighing 3.9 ounces, it’s light but feels solid in the hand.

The Behold’s 3-inch touch screen takes up the majority of the phone, and three physical keys–end, send, and back–reside underneath. The landscape touch-screen QWERTY keyboard, with generously spaced keys and vibrating feedback, is comfortable to use. I didn’t notice any lag between when I typed and when the results appeared on the screen, a problem I’ve experienced with some other touch-screen keyboards. The Behold’s predictive text feature gives two word choices, but you can also turn predictive text off with a dedicated key on the keyboard. The arrangement includes a few dedicated punctuation keys, as well.

The Behold uses Samsung’s TouchWiz interface, also seen on the Omnia. But unlike the Omnia, which seemed sluggish running Windows Mobile, the Behold is very responsive. The accelerometer, which reacted slowly on the Omnia, flipped from portrait to landscape quickly and smoothly on this handset. I encountered some lag only when I scrolled through lists of contacts or my media library. And otherwise, I found TouchWiz very user-friendly.

The lens for the Behold’s 5-megapixel camera, along with a flash, is located on the phone’s metallic back (which is available in a brushed espresso or light-rose finish). A volume rocker and a headphone/USB jack lie on the left spine of the device, while a dedicated camera key and a phone-lock key sit on the right.

Call quality was very good overall. My contacts sounded loud and clear, and I heard no static or interference. Parties on the other end heard some background noise, but otherwise the sound quality was clean. I experienced no dropped calls.

The Today screen–the Behold’s home screen–has a widget bar running along its left side. You can arrange the widgets in any order, as well as drag one into the main part of the screen to launch its respective app. To end the application, you slide the widget back onto the bar. Available widgets include a calendar, a phone book, a music player, and a clock. But other than rearranging widgets and removing them, you don’t have a lot of room for customization; you can’t add new widgets to the bar or buy new programs (there is no app store), which was disappointing.

The Behold offers a full HTML browser, which is a nice addition for a non-smart-phone handset. The browser is difficult to use on occasion: Scrolling through pages wasn’t as smooth a process as on other touch-screen browsers, and getting the hang of navigating took time. For example, to zoom in on a page, you must touch the magnifying-glass icon at the top of the browser and then select the page size to view. The phone doesn’t do Wi-Fi, either, but that didn’t seem like too big of a loss; Web pages loaded very quickly over T-Mobile’s 3G network.

The Behold’s standout feature is its 5-megapixel camera, with 4X digital zoom and a power LED flash. The camera has four resolution settings, light metering, adjustable ISO, a self-timer, a self-portrait mirror on the back cover, an antishake feature, and a setting for shooting backlit subjects. It also has three fun shooting modes (continuous, panorama, and mosaic), as well as a smile-shot mode that will take another shot if the subject is frowning.

A credit card is a form of borrowing that often involves charges. Credit terms and conditions affect your overall cost.
So it’s wise to compare terms and fees before you agree to open a credit or charge card account. The following are some important terms to consider that generally must be disclosed in credit card applications or in solicitations that require no application. You also may want to ask about these terms when you’re shopping for a card.

If you don’t understand the language, credit card offers and statements could lead you to deep debt — or at least furious frustration. For the big scoop on the fine print, here’s what these frequently used credit card terms mean.

1.Average daily balance — This is the method by which most credit cards calculate your payment due. An average daily balance is determined by adding each day’s balance and then dividing that total by the number of days in a billing cycle. The average daily balance is then multiplied by a card’s monthly periodic rate, which is calculated by dividing the annual percentage rate by 12. A card with an annual rate of 18 percent would have a monthly periodic rate of 1.5 percent. If that card had a $500 average daily balance it would yield a monthly finance charge of $7.50.

2.APR(Annual percentage rate) — A yearly rate of interest that includes fees and costs paid to acquire the loan. Lenders are required by law to disclose the APR. The rate is calculated in a standard way, taking the average compound interest rate over the term of the loan, so borrowers can compare loans.

3.Balance transfer — The process of moving an unpaid credit card debt from one issuer to another. Card issuers sometimes offer teaser rates to encourage balance transfers coming in and balance-transfer fees to discourage them from going out.

4.Cash-advance fee — A charge by the bank for using credit cards to obtain cash. This fee can be stated in terms of a flat per-transaction fee or a percentage of the amount of the cash advance. For example, the fee may be expressed as follows: “2%/$10?. This means that the cash advance fee will be the greater of 2 percent of the cash advance amount or $10.

The banks may limit the amount that can be charged to a specific dollar amount. Depending on the bank issuing the card, the cash advance fee may be deducted directly from the cash advance at the time the money is received or it may be posted to your bill as of the day you received the advance. The cost of a cash advance is also higher because there generally is no grace period. Interest accrues from the moment the money is withdrawn.

5.Card holder agreement — The written statement that gives the terms and conditions of a credit card account. The cardholder agreement is required by Federal Reserve regulations. It must include the Annual Percentage Rate, the monthly minimum payment formula, annual fee if applicable, and the cardholder’s rights in billing disputes. Changes in the cardholder agreement may be made, with written advance notice, at any time by the issuer. Rules for imposing changes vary from state to state, but the rules that apply are those of the home state of the issuing bank, not the home state of the cardholder.

6.Finance charge — The charge for using a credit card, comprised of interest costs and other fees.

7.Floor — The minimum rate possible on a variable-rate loan or line of credit, after any initial introductory rate period. For example, on a credit card with the Prime rate as its index, no matter how low the Prime rate drops, the rate on the line may never decrease below the stated rate floor.

8.Free Period — Also called a “grace period,” a free period lets you avoid finance charges by paying your balance in full before the due date. Knowing whether a card gives you a free period is especially important if you plan to pay your account in full each month. Without a free period, the card issuer may impose a finance charge from the date you use your card or from the date each transaction is posted to your account. If your card includes a free period, the issuer must mail your bill at least 14 days before the due date so you’ll have enough time to pay.

9.Minimum payment — The minimum amount a cardholder can pay to keep the account from going into default. Some card issuers will set a high minimum if they are uncertain of the cardholder’s ability to pay. Most card issuers require a minimum payment of two percent of the outstanding balance.

10.Over-the-limit fee — A fee charged for exceeding the credit limit on the card.

Analyst: Apple could sell a million iPhone gift cards

Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu has been checking with his contacts in Apple’s (AAPL) supply and distribution channels and reports that demand for the iPhone is “fairly healthy” in the U.S., Europe and, with the exception of Japan, most of Asia Pacific. He’s anticipating sales of 6 million units for the December quarter (Apple’s fiscal 2009 Q1), down from 6.9 million in Q4 but in line with the Street’s expectations of between 5 and 7 million.

But that significantly understates actual demand for the iPhone, Wu says, because it doesn’t include the wild card in this holiday season’s iPhone sales: the iPhone gift card.

“We think there is strong reception of AAPL’s new iPhone 3G Gift Card program,” Wu wrote in a report to clients Wednesday, “where the process of giving the iPhone as a gift is greatly simplified without the need for activation and personal information. … We estimate several hundred thousand to one million units could be impacted.”

The good news about these gift cards is that Apple gets to collect the revenue up front, which improves cash flow. The bad news for Apple’s Q1 earnings is that it can’t recognize the sale of an iPhone until the customer activates it. “The risk here is that the customer will likely activate post-Christmas,” writes Wu. “Therefore revenue and units won’t likely be recognized until the March quarter.”

In a separate note issued Tuesday, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster took a stab at estimating how many iPhones Wal-Mart (WMT) is likely to sell when it, as reported, begins carrying the devices three days after Christmas. Bottom line: Apple could sell as many iPhones through Wal-Mart in 2009 as it sells through its own Apple Stores.

At the same time Greenfield deployments, where latest technologies and systems are usually installed, are expected to be put on hold as new branches are unlikely to be opened.
“Focusing on the applications of security systems beyond traditional security applications, for example in customer relationship management, is one of the keys to succeeding in these challenging situations,” notes Grossi.
Greater customer awareness about the advantages and new functionalities of IP-based systems drives banks to maintain their current level of spending in electronic physical security, even in the present difficult times. Furthermore, regulatory and insurance requirements compel banks to sustain a required level of physical electronic security.

ACACIA (a-ka’sha). About 1200 species of acacia are scattered through the warm regions of the world. Most of them are shrubs or small trees. Some are matted plants a few inches high. All are thorny and pod-bearing. The tiny sweet-smelling blossoms cluster together in fluffy balls or cylinder shapes. They range in color from deep yellow to almost white. The leaves are usually grayish and fernlike. The acacia is quick-growing and short-lived.
Australia has about 300 species of acacia. The early settlers called them wattles because they used the pliant branches to make wattle-and-daub huts. The golden wattle is Australia’s national Bower.
In the southwestern United States acacias are grown in many parks and gardens. The ornamental species were imported from Australia. The native catclaw (Texas mimosa) grows wild and (Types Of Flowers )is heartily disliked because of its strong hooked spines. The Arizona Indians, however, made meal of the pods. Smaller acacias are eaten by cattle and horses.
Gum arabic is obtained from an African species (see Gums and Resins). The Australians get tannin, used for tanning leather, from the bark of some species and make furniture of the hard, dark “black-wood” acacia. The wood of an Indian species is the chief source of catechu, a dye for true khaki. France grows several kinds for perfume.
The genus acacia belongs to the mimosa tribe of the pea family . The black locust is sometimes called “false acacia” . The plant that florists call mimosa is actually an acacia.

Hormone changes can generate migraines

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My daughter, who is 41, has been getting really bad migraine headaches just before her periods. Is it due to menopause?

— V.M.

Her headaches are not due to menopause. They come from her menstrual cycle, and they’re called menstrual migraines. A migraine sufferer often can identify things that give rise to a headache — foods, alcohol, physical exertion, too little sleep, too much sleep, hunger, bright lights and loud noise. For quite a few women, menstrual periods trigger the headache. The sudden drop in the female hormone estrogen that takes place at the time of a menstrual period precipitates headaches in these women.

Your daughter can take medicine prior to her anticipated menstrual period to prevent the headache. Naprosyn or one of the many other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, taken two days before the period begins, often can avert menstrual migraines. They should be taken for as long as the headache has lasted in the past.

Another approach is birth-control pills. The ones that stop periods for six months to a year are particularly useful. Seasonale and Lybrel are two such preparations.

Most migraine sufferers are aware of the triptan drugs, medicines that have had a huge impact on migraine treatment. There are seven such drugs, and I won’t mention them all. Maxalt and Relpax are two of these drugs. The triptans should be used as the anti-inflammatory drugs are used — two days before onset of periods and continued for the length of the usual migraine.

Many business technology organizations are pursuing green computing, but what does that actually look like? At Honda’s new data center in Longmont, Colo., it entails floors made of recycled concrete, office furniture crafted of reused steel and newsprint, low-flow automatic faucets, motion-sensor lights, energy-efficient servers, outside air for cooling, and an Energy Star-certified roof.

Honda isn’t insulated from the economic pressures squeezing U.S. automakers; its U.S. sales fell 32% in November compared with a year ago. Honda’s green IT push should lead to lower energy costs and other efficiencies, though the bigger impetus is a company-wide commitment to being environmentally friendly, says Jennifer Sepull, CIO of American Honda.

Honda’s 61,000-square-foot data center, which opened in October, is one of a handful of U.S. data centers certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system for green building construction. Honda spent more than $25 million on the data center, a price that included a premium for its green design. Because the facility is only 2 months old, Sepull declined to estimate just how much Honda stands to save in energy costs.

Honda selected building materials based on proximity to the data center’s location and materials that were produced in an “environmentally responsible manner,” Sepull says. And it recycled 73% of the construction waste associated with the project. The company left much of the site undeveloped and replanted trees and shrubs indigenous to the area.

Data center administrators were trained in how to be more energy efficient. For example, they were advised to decommission unused equipment quickly and to use management tools to ensure that servers are optimally provisioned. Honda has found that energy-monitoring tools aren’t up to snuff and that the data they generate needs to be more comprehensive. “They’re just coming on the market,” Sepull says. “We monitor electricity, but monitoring will get more advanced to give us better day-to-day awareness.”

In commemoration of Ferrari’s 16th Constructor’s World title the rear grille will sport a special badge. Inside, a plaque reading “limited series” is mounted just above the air vents at the center of the dashboard. Awful’ Month for Carmakers

Carmakers continued to load on the discounts in November, but American consumers continued to slam on the brakes.

The industry tried everything. Companies offered zero-percent financing, “red tag” sales, employee-discount pricing and even buy-one-get-one-free pickup truck deals. Still, U.S. auto sales plunged to their lowest pace in 26 years. Overall, automakers sold 746,789 cars, trucks and minivans in the United States, down 37 percent from a year earlier, according to Autodata.

All major carmakers suffered steep declines, but Detroit was particularly hard hit. General Motors’ sales tumbled 41 percent, to 152,552. Ford sold 118,319 vehicles last month, a 30 percent fall. Chrysler sold 85,260, down 47 percent.

Jesse Toprak, a sales analyst at Edmunds.com, said the incentive programs have reached a point of diminishing returns, where virtually no amount of cash on the hood will move sales. He said Americans harbor deep economic fears.

“The majority of the decline is low consumer confidence,” he said. “Consumers are not showing up regardless of what kind of deals, regardless of how low gas prices go.”

Toprak said middle-class and upper-middle-class Americans — who make up the market for new car buyers — are reeling from steep erosions in home values and losses in 401(k) plans.

“They don’t know if they are going to have a job in the next few months,” he said. “It’s a bit depressing when you put it all together. Consumers don’t want to make a big-ticket purchase, and cars are the biggest purchase after homes.” The sales figures were also hurt by would-be buyers’ inability to get financing, Toprak said.

November’s sales, translated into the closely watched seasonally adjusted annualized sales rate, or SAAR, slipped to 10.18 million, the lowest selling pace since October 1982, according to preliminary figures by Autodata. Sales appeared to slow from October, when the seasonally adjusted selling pace was measured at 10.56 million.

Economists and industry analysts yesterday were looking for signs that the market was close to bottoming out. Bob Schnorbus, the chief economist at J.D. Power and Associates, said he expected stronger November results from automakers. He said the industry was struggling to get out of “unprecedented territory” and that fourth-quarter results may represent the low point for the industry, barring other large-scale financial calamities.

“It’s probably getting pretty close,” Schnorbus said. “That’s kind of cold comfort if it turns out that the recovery is very weak and protracted.”

U.S. auto dealers looking north of border to snap up used-car bargains

Consumer confidence could hurt new-car sales in final quarter of fiscal year

Bargain-priced “slightly used” cars will become a hot commodity in Canada as price-conscious buyers scoop them up and U.S. car dealers — armed with a stronger currency — prowl the Canadian market for deals.

That’s the prediction from Canadian car-pricing expert Paul Timeoto, who expects a falling dollar to stir the interest of U.S. dealers in Canadian vehicles.

“The prospect of U.S. dealers coming up here to buy is looming very strongly now,” said Timeoto, president of online car-pricing-data firm CarCostCanada.com. “The dollar has only been below 90 cents US for a few weeks so it may take a little while for them to pay attention to our market. But it won’t take long.”

He noted that until recently, Canadian car dealers took advantage of a strong Canadian dollar to buy used cars — less than one year old — in the U.S. and resell them in Canada.

“Dealers went down there and literally brought them back by the truckload and Canadians saved a lot of money that way,” Timeoto said. “But that situation has dried up now and the reverse is likely to happen.”

New vehicle sales in Canada during the first three quarters this year appeared to be heading for a solid year of about 1.6 million sales, but declining consumer confidence in the final quarter could push that figure down.

Statistics Canada said 14,900 new vehicles were sold in B.C. in September, a 10.8-per-cent decline from the same month last year.

Dueck Downtown general manager Greg Keith said used cars are popular with many buyers, but almost everyone wants the newest technology possible because fuel efficiency is such an important factor.

“It doesn’t make a lot of sense for a person to buy a three-year-old car, especially with gas prices the way they are now,” he said. “I drive a new Escalade hybrid full-size vehicle that gets better fuel economy than a lot of mid-sized cars.”

StatsCan said new-vehicle prices in Canada are at their most affordable level now in more than 15 years, measured as a percentage of disposable income. It takes about 19 weeks of disposable income for a typical Canadian household to buy a new car, down from a peak of 25 weeks a decade ago.

But for travelers still planning to visit Grandma’s for Thanksgiving or spend Christmas weekend in Paris, the news isn’t all bad. There are still deals to be found, provided you shop carefully and plan ahead. Check out our 10 tips for holiday travel and find some joy this holiday season.

Avoid peak travel dates
At Thanksgiving, Wednesday is the critical outbound “avoid” day as a rule. Traveling on Thanksgiving day proper is often a breeze and more affordable; there are often cut-rate airfare deals on Thanksgiving day.

On the return, Friday morning isn’t bad at all, with each successive day getting a little busier, more difficult and more expensive through Sunday evening. The bottom line: If you are looking for a deal, you won’t find one on the peak travel days. Travel off-peak whenever possible.

South Africa’s Rand Rises Against Dollar, Euro as Stocks Rally

Nov. 4 (Bloomberg) — South Africa’s rand rose against the dollar as gains in stocks on better-than-expected earnings eased concern the global economy is slowing, encouraging purchases of higher-yielding assets.

The rand traded below 10 per dollar as advances in Asia and Europe boosted the MSCI World Index of stocks for a sixth straight day. South Africa’s currency strengthened even after an industry report showed vehicle sales fell for a 19th straight month in October, indicating the continent’s biggest economy is faltering.

“Globally we’re seeing a general improvement in positive sentiment which has fed through to European equities from Asia,” said Jon Harrison, an emerging-markets currency strategist in London at Dresdner Kleinwort. “Lower global interest rates help alleviate some of the strains in the financial system and that helps short-term risk appetite.”

The rand climbed as much as 1.9 percent to 9.8506 per dollar and was at 9.9125 by 1:12 p.m. in Johannesburg. It also advanced versus all 16 most-actively traded currencies monitored by Bloomberg, adding 0.7 percent to 12.6187 per euro.

South Africa’s currency still faces “challenges in the medium to long term” and will “trend much weaker” next year, Harrison said. It may slip to as low as 12 per dollar in the next three to six months, he predicted.

“Emerging markets aren’t going to avoid the impact of a global economic slowdown,” Harrison said. “We still expect to see further sell-offs in riskier asset classes.”

Oct. 28 (Bloomberg) — The following is a list of companies whose shares may have unusual price changes in South Africa. Stock symbols are in parentheses after company names and prices are from the last close.

South Africa’s FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index fell for a fourth day, losing 95.43, or 0.5 percent, to 18,363.70. The measure has dropped 23 percent in October, the worst monthly performance since August 1998.

AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (ANG SJ): Gold fell for the fifth time in six days in Asia as the U.S. dollar’s strength kept a lid on investor demand for the precious metal as an alternative asset. AngloGold, Africa’s largest mining company, climbed 4 rand, or 2.5 percent, to 164.

Ansys Ltd. (ANS SJ): The designer of transport and defense monitoring and control systems said it will post a loss per share of between 4.5 cents and 5.5 cents in the six months through August after delays in the start up of a “significant” number of their projects. Ansys slumped 17 cents, or 14 percent, to 1.08 rand.

ArcelorMittal South Africa Ltd. (ACL SJ): Africa’s biggest steelmaker said it will leave December prices unchanged after cutting them for two consecutive months. ArcelorMittal South Africa fell 7 rand, or 8.1 percent, to 79 rand.

Barloworld Ltd. (BAW SJ): Morgan Stanley rated the world’s largest forklift dealer as “equal-weight” in new coverage of the stock. Barloworld lost 1.90 rand, or 4 percent, to 46.

BHP Billiton Ltd. (BIL SJ): Copper fell below $4,000 a metric ton as the ongoing slump in stock markets increased concern a glob recession will sap demand. The metal used in wires and pipes plunged by the daily limit for a fifth day in Shanghai. BHP, the world’s largest mining company, rose 2.07 rand, or 1.4 percent, to 145.90.

Infrasors Ltd. (IRA SJ): The brick and sand producer said first-half earnings per share fell as much as 40 percent. Infrasors was unchanged at 1.90 rand.

Murray & Roberts Holdings Ltd. (MUR SJ): South Africa’s largest construction company by market value holds its annual general meeting in Johannesburg. Murray & Roberts was unchanged at 60 rand.

At 0637 GMT the rand traded 2.08 percent firmer at 11.32 against the greenback, compared with Wednesday’s close at 11.56 in New York. The local currency went as low as 11.88 against the dollar overnight, its weakest level since March 2002, Reuters data shows.

The rand’s latest gains were due to some profit taking after its heavy losses overnight and in Asian trade earlier on Thursday, a Johannesburg trader said.

“But it still looks quite horrible. There’s lack of liquidity, especially during New York trade, although it seems as though during local (Johannesburg) time we have two-way flows,” the trader said.

“All emerging market currencies are under immense pressure. To be honest it can go any way, but we’re still of the view that there could be some more rand weakening.”

Government bonds were also firmer, and yields fell in turn. The benchmark 2015 bond yield dropped 6.5 basis points to 9.89 percent, while that for the 2036 note was down 7 basis points at 9.215 percent.

New software is enabling graziers to track their animals with their mobile phone.

Queensland Primary Industries and Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin says “quick-thumbed livestock owners” can now exchange National Livestock Identification Scheme information with the NLIS database, following the launch of the new mobile phone application software.

“This new software, ‘NLIS Express’, can be easily loaded onto compatible mobile phones - providing a new way to quickly capture and transfer NLIS data,” Mr Mulherin said.

“It is going to be very useful to a lot of sectors within the livestock industry.”

Biosecurity Queensland Principal Project Officer Michael Lancaster said training would be provided to graziers in coming months.

“The training will be available to anyone who uses the NLIS database, but we also see it being of particular interest to agents,” he said.

Agent Dan Sullivan, from Sullivan Livestock in Gympie, is one of the first people in Queensland to use the new software.

Mr Sullivan said he uses NLIS Express to transfer data directly to the database on behalf of clients.

“With NLIS Express I can provide a transfer service to our clients - often while I’m still at their property,” he said.

“Often, I’ll know if the transfer has been completed before I leave the property and this has removed the need to come back to the office, freeing up my time to continue on with other business,” Mr Sullivan said.

The application was developed by MLA and is made available at no cost.

Republican White House nominee John McCain on Wednesday attacked Barack Obama s achievements as meager and said his Democratic foe did not know how the world or the US military worked. The Arizona Senator who was set to be formally nominated as his party s White House champion later Wednesday also defended his under fire running mate Sarah Palin saying she had been vetted by voters in her home state Alaska. He said in an interview with ABC World News that Obama s achievements were very meager in comparison to those of Palin who was a smalltown mayor and is now Alaska Governor. Obama has argued that though he is merely a first term senator and a former state lawmaker he has more executive experience than Palin as he sits atop a multi million dollar presidential campaign with thousands of employees. Senator Obama has a campaign to run Governor Sarah Palin has employees in the state government McCain said. She s responsible for percent of the nation s energy supply. I m enterta! ined by the comparison and I hope we can keep making that comparison that running a political campaign is somehow comparable to being the executive of the largest state in America. McCain who makes his keynote speech to the Republican National Convention on Thursday said his resume was far more appropriate to the job of president than that of Obama. With what seems like a lot of cash in your bank account or the knowledge that it will be on its way there soon, the temptation to whine the entire amount on a top of the range computer or the latest in home entertainment equipment is huge.

But with the majority of graduates starting out in their working lives deep in debt, this is not a wise move. Even if you are lucky enough to have a grant or scholarship, there is a very high likelihood that it simply is not enough to see you through college and so you’ve had to take out loans as well. And you will have to pay back your loans,with interest, even if that seems a big way in the future. So what can you do to avoid being flat broke by Christmas?

Work out how much you actually need before Christmas for hole, bills, food and other essentials, add in something for entertainment and stick the rest in a savings account, with the highest rate of interest you can get. Not much, these days, granted, but outstrip than nothing. Don’t touch this account before Christmas, except in dire emergencies, such as illness or starvation.

If you don’t already have your own computer, use the computers provided by the college. When Gmail crashed last Monday affecting many organizations that depend on it for work e mail via the Google Apps suite widespread gnashing of teeth ensued. In the middle of an important press announcement staffers at San Francisco Internet startup Kwiry sought alternate ways to stay in touch with contacts. At Davidoff Communications the outage hit less than hours after the Chicago company s migration of its five users to Google Apps. Since we re only on day four of our implementation let s just say if Apps were on my baseball team it would be hitting at the bottom of the lineup said Davidoff Sys! tems Administrator Mitch Wilkos in an e mail interview this week. With its Apps hosted suite of communications and collaboration applications Google is a leading proponent of software as a service SaaS an emerging model of software delivery that backers say represents the future. Because vendors host applications in their own data centers companies don t have to concern themselves with hardware provisioning and software maintenance. By living in the Internet cloud these hosted applications simplify sharing and collaboration among employees. However the experience of users living through the recent Google Apps outages could serve as a deterrent to some IT and business managers who might not be ready to ditch conventional software packages that are installed on their servers. If a company relies on Google Apps for its e mail its IT and business managers have little to do when a Gmail outage hits them and with end users demanding explanations this waiting game can be a very st! ressful situation as John Proffitt IT services director at APTI can attest. For me as the Google Apps administrator the disruption was pretty damn irritating. Aside from getting kicked out of e mail I need to do my own job it also forced me to completely refocus on figuring out what s happening with Gmail and Google Apps he said in an e mail interview. For the two hours that the outage lasted Proffitt estimates that about percent of the organization s approximately employees were affected some severely including the journalists who make up about a quarter of the staff. It was constant troubleshooting testing research posting to the Google Apps forums and so on. Plus there s the emotional strain of wondering whether you completely screwed up by moving everyone to Google Apps as our sole e mail system. That s what freaked me out Did Google just make me look like an idiot Proffitt added. That s not a nice feeling to have especially since Proffitt did his homework and took his time before deciding to move his end users to Google Apps. He used the ! suite for about nine months himself as a guinea pig and then rolled it out to the entire organization six weeks ago. Prior to Monday s crash his satisfaction level with Google Apps was about percent. Now he puts it at percent. Mostly that percent drop is based on fear of another perhaps more damaging outage. It hasn t happened but now I know it could happen any time and without warning and if it does I have virtually no recourse to get the service running again he said. Last Monday s outage was sandwiched between two other Gmail crashes one the week before and another one on Thursday and Friday of last week both of which were smaller in scale. Proffitt wasn t affected by those other outages but he s ready to rethink his status as hosted software adopter if things don t go well in the future. If we began to experience a similar outage more than about two or three business hours per quarter we d probably make Google Apps and Gmail a backup solution to a locally hosted mail sy! stem if we used it at all. And it would likely be years before we d try a cloud based collaborative system again from any vendor Proffitt said. Still Proffitt and other Apps administrators interviewed are hoping that Google will quickly strengthen the reliability of Gmail and the other suite components to a point where crashes become extremely rare. The benefits Apps offers to their small and medium size organizations are significant in terms of cost savings and the flexibility of Web based software. Even though we ve only had Apps for a few days I m already impressed with the customization options. The ability to completely ditch Outlook makes Apps a worthwhile service to our company said Davidoff s Wilkos. The Gmail interface feels more intuitive and is significantly quicker than Outlook. And the mobile accessibility is a huge improvement over our old e mail service. Although Monday s outage stung Kwiry on an important day and the startup was hit briefly again on Thursday CEO Ron Feldman is betting on Google Apps. Google understands its trem! endous responsibility to keep things up and running Feldman said via e mail. Carlos Leyva managing shareholder at Digital Business Law Group is also confident in Google and is sold on the SaaS model which he expects will allow his new law firm to grow quickly without having to spend a fortune on its computing infrastructure. No one s happy when there s downtime but there s always downtime. I ve seen Exchange go down often. Many times you re left to your own IT people to fix it. That can be good or bad. I d rather it be Google s problem. They ve got a world class team. Their reputation is on the line. Over time they re going to get better and better he said in a phone interview. Thomas Harbinson president of IDA International in Derby Connecticut found last Monday s outage a minor disruption for the engineering and construction service company s users. They have been very satisfied with Apps which the company has been using for about a year after migrating away from Exchange! . As a small organization looking at pre Google Apps practice if it had been my hardware in house that went down I would not have had anywhere near the reaction time and response to be restored as Google did with the Apps service Harbinson said via e mail. Christian Gerhartsreiter s earliest life was in some ways a rebellion against Bergen a sleepy town surrounded by rolling velvety hills that is popular with tourists from France the Netherlands and the Czech Republic who come to cycle and hike before heading to more bustling destinations in Austria Italy and Turkey. Drinking beer at the Edelweiss pub in nearby Siegsdorf several locals recalled attending elementary school with Christian Gerhartsreiter. One said he was mischievous and recounted the time Gerhartsreiter used an air rifle to fire at the windows of the parish center at St. Egidius a cream colored church with a dark gray spire that looms over Bergen. He was like a flu said the schoolmate now who declined to give his name. Another former schoolmate chimed in In every place there are troublemakers! . Some stay like that and others change. The local teenagers usually spend their free time swimming in nearby Lake Chiemsee skiing and hiking. Once a year thousands of the villagers gather at the top of Mount Hochfelln to celebrate a Catholic Mass. Bergen s coziness can be beguiling but also stifling for a young person. I like it here but for teenagers it s a little boring said Simon Weichwald a thin year old with shaggy brown hair who works in his parents pastry shop near the Gerhartsreiter home where Rockefeller was raised on Bahnhof Street a busy route in the heart of the village. I d like to live in Berlin or any big city in Germany. Christian Gerhartsreiter went to grade school in Bergen and Siegsdorf then a private business focused high school in Traunstein a larger city about miles north of Bergen. He was always very smart said Alexander Gerhartsreiter who with his blue eyes and long thin nose resembles his brother. But when Alexander was about or his brother left for America telling the family that he wanted better things. The family r! arely heard from Christian and eventually resigned themselves to occasional letters and phone calls. Alexander said the last time the family heard from Christian Gerhartsreiter was about the same year the Sohuses vanished in San Marino and Chichester left San Marino before he could be questioned by police. Nine years later in workers digging a pool for the new owners of the Sohus home found skeletal remains believed to be those of John Sohus. Neither Linda nor her remains were ever found. In Bergen a friend of the Gerhartsreiter family recalled only a snippet of the life in America that Christian had recounted to his family. He said he was hosting a radio show doing classical music said the friend who would only give his first name Werner. In fact he was hosting a late night classical radio show at Berlin High School s watt radio station in Connecticut WERB while an exchange student in the late s said Jeff Wayne who served as adviser to the club. Wayne said the bespectacled! young Gerhartsreiter struck him as a pleasant but also a loner with a serious demeanor who seemed too old for high school. We figured well he s European who knows he said. Charlotte Anfang Gaubatz who owns a convenience store in Bergen said Rockefeller sounded nothing like Simon Gerhartsreiter the father. She recalled the elder Gerhartsreiter s bawdy sense of humor how he always told her she should eat more so she would have a plumper bottom and his determination to make her laugh when she was in a bad mood. Usually they say that children are like their parents she said. But the way I know Simon I could never really imagine that. It s so shocking because Simon was such a nice person. In Boston Hrones conceded his client used an alias while on the run after allegedly kidnapping his daughter Reigh Storrow Mills Boss. Just because someone uses aliases doesn t mean they are guilty of anything he said. Hrones said that Rockefeller was an excellent father and that their legal strategy when he goes on trial for taking his daughter in violation of th! e court order will be to contend that the custody issue should have been settled under English not Massachusetts law because Boss lives in London. A group of U.S. evangelical leaders called on Wednesday for a pullback from party politics so that followers would not become useful idiots exploited for partisan gain. One in four U.S. adults count themselves as evangelical Protestants giving them serious clout in a country where religion and politics often mix. Conservative evangelicals have become a key support base for the Republican Party. But the movement has had growing pains and the statement issued on Wednesday called an Evangelical Manifesto is the latest sign of emerging fractures as some activists seek to broaden its agenda beyond hot button social issues such as opposition to abortion and gay rights. Christians from both sides of the political spectrum left as well as right have made the mistake of politicizing faith the manifesto declares. That way faith loses its independence the church becomes the regime at prayer Christians become useful idiots for one political party or another and the Christian faith becom! es an ideology in its purest form it said. The manifesto was signed by leading and mostly centrist evangelicals such as Leith Anderson president of the million member National Association of Evangelicals Mark Bailey president of the Dallas Theological Seminary and evangelical academic and author David Gushee. Many of the more than signatories have been critical in the past of evangelical partisan involvement which was seen as the crucial element behind U.S. President George W. Bush s re election victory in . Leading figures on the conservative Religious Right such as Tony Perkins president of the Family Research Council did not sign the document and his office said he had not been asked to sign it. LIMITED POLITICAL IMPACT Michael Cromartie vice president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center said of the statement It s a sign of maturation of the evangelical movement . It s an important theological document but it will have limited political influence because it is making ! a essentially a theological argument. The document also highlights divisions that have been there for a while as some leading evangelicals attempt to redirect the movement s considerable energies toward areas such as action on global poverty and climate change . Polls show growing numbers of evangelicals receptive to a wider social agenda and Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have been attempting to woo them in a bid to peel some away from the Republican camp ahead of the November election showdown with John McCain . But analysts say most are still center right politically and polls consistently show most remain opposed to abortion rights. They are also deeply committed to their faith. Microsoft has dropped its nearly three month long pursuit of Yahoo ending a historic acquisition attempt whose failure takes Microsoft back to square one in its quest to boost its online business to better compete against Google . We continue to believe that our proposed acquisition made sense for Microsoft Yahoo and the market as a whole. Our goal in pursuing a combination with Yahoo was to provide greater choice and innovation in the marketplace and create real value for our respective stockholders and employees said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in a statement distributed early Saturday evening. More Money Not Sufficient Microsoft had raised its initial bid by about US billion but that didn t convince Yahoo to accept the revised offer Microsoft said. After careful consideration we believe the economics demanded by Yahoo do not make sense for us and it is in the best interests of Microsoft stockholders employees and other stakeholders to withdraw our proposal said Ballmer. I! n response Yahoo issued a statement reiterating its position that Microsoft s offer was too low and saying that many Yahoo shareholders agreed with its position. As days lengthen and leaves unfurl on the trees songs of spring are in the air everywhere. Tomorrow the invigorating music of the new season will be sung in Spanish as Columbia Pro Cantare presents an unusual and ambitious program Latin American Spring at p.m. in Jim Rouse Theatre. Tomorrow s concert will feature the choral ensemble assisted by soprano April Joy Gutierrez mezzo soprano Cyndie Eberhardt pianist Alison Matuskey and an ensemble of players of indigenous and classical instruments. Together they perform music gathered from many corners of the Americas Peru Brazil Cuba Argentina and Mexico. While the program s dessert course of Latin American popular songs will no doubt be familiar who hasn t heard La Bamba the real treat will be the opportunity to hear rarely performed works by Heitor Villa Lobos Paquito D Rivera Ariel Ramirez and Astor Piazzolla. The program opens with an anonymous th century motet from Peru Hanacpachap cussicuinin in the indigenous Quechua langu! age which has the historical significance of being the first example of four part choral music printed in the New World. It was originally written as music for liturgical procession. Villa Lobos Bachianas brasileiras was the th century Brazilian composer s homage in his own words to the great genius of Johann Sebastian Bach whom he considered a kind of universal folkloric source rich and profound linking all peoples. Villa Lobos musical style a melding of local folk traditions and Bach s elaborate counterpoint is evident in the ravishing and haunting Bachianas brasileiras No. . Much less well known however are his motets for chorus. Their complex harmonies according to Pro Cantare s director Frances Motyca Dawson are extraordinarily hard to sing but the effect of the chromatic modernism combined with just a little flavor of Latin in the restrained rhythms is stunning unbelievable. Argentine composer Ariel Ramirez s Misa Criolla of is purported to be the first Roman Catholic! Mass set in a language other than Latin. Scored for soloists chorus and indigenous instruments including the charanga a guitar made from the shell of an armadillo percussion and pan flutes the five movements of the Mass are each based on a traditional Argentine dance form. Ramirez was part of a musical movement in Argentina in the s and s called the boom del folklore in which national composers turned to the rural Creole musical traditions as inspiration for their classical compositions. The program s second half has a variety of works including Paquito D Rivera s Song for Peace for soprano piano clarinet and cello. Commissioned by the New York Festival of Song the text was written by fellow Cuban American Annie Colina the words and music are an overt commentary on the repressive political conditions in the composer s homeland. Three piano transcriptions by tango phenomenon Astor Piazzolla show the quirky genius responsible for recent innovations in Argentina s beloved musical tradition. The three Angel tangos ranging from manic to melancholy! will give those unfamiliar with his music a tantalizing taste of his iconoclastic style. Renditions of traditional Brazilian folksongs Ernesto Lecuona s effusively passionate Malague a and popular songs from Cuba and Mexico will close the program giving listeners a chance to hear familiar music. Chances are that toes will be tapping well before this point in the program however. Don t pass up the chance to bask in the warmth of a Latin American Spring. Through programs like this one Dawson hopes to forge new relationships in the community and to encourage new audiences to come to hear Columbia Pro Cantare.
