Is Happiness a Choice

Is happiness a choice Is it a mere decision we can make at any situation every step along the road of life Can we always say that the glass of water given us is half full instead of being half empty Can it be made full by believing that it is full when it is really not What shall we say to the beggar who has not eaten in three full days What shall we say to orphaned children whose parents were devoured by a dreaded disease children who now roam the streets naked and helpless and lost What shall we say to the unloved to those who have nobody to show them the way of compassion sympathy and friendship What shall we say to the imprisoned when no real sin accuses them of their supposed crime Is it easy to decide to be happy Is it even possible to find peace when a hurricane hovers about you ready to tear you apart I am not saying that it isn t possible I am not saying that we cannot Yet say not so easily that happiness is a choice and that at any point in time we can choose to be! happy Say instead that we can choose to approach God Most High and that we can enter His sanctuary Say that we can surrender there and let go of our tears Say that we can ask for Grace for Strength and for Healing For this we have a choice and with this we can have Hope Finally my friend we can hold on to that Hope and believe that we can find what it is we re looking for. Relate! d Photo gallery Riders in the storm NOAA s National Hurricane Center Lockheed WP D Orion Length feet inches Wingspan feet inches Engines Four Allison T turboprops Maximum takeoff weight pounds Useful load pounds Maximum range miles Crew size Typically to depending on mission Source National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration PORTLAND Struggling to try on a bulky orange survival suit which I m told could mean the difference between life and death in an emergency I m focusing on the fact that statistically speaking this seven hour flight will be safer than my morning commute down Interstate . But part of my brain insists on raising a few issues The pavement on I never disappears from underneath my tires dropping feet in a matter of seconds. The seats in my car don t have ditching procedure signs posted alongside saying what to do if it ends up belly down on the surface of the ocean. And perhaps most important No one has ever called my Toyota a Hurricane Hunter. Hurricane Hunter is the nickname of the vintage Lockheed WP D Orion we ve just bo! arded and the moniker is no exaggeration Painted on its fuselage are more than red symbols with names and dates of the hurricanes into which it has flown from Bonny in to Felix in . OK I respect its credentials. But should we really ride into a storm in an plane built the year Richard Nixon left office Shouldn t an airplane that uses propellers instead of jet engines be headed somewhere a little safer say the Museum of Flight It s an older aircraft but it does exactly what we need it to do says Paul Flaherty a project manager for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration which operates two of these P s and is in the process of acquiring another from the Navy. It s exceptionally sturdy says Flaherty. It s dependable. It accommodates a wide range of scientific gear. And in rough weather it s easier to maneuver than a jet. Despite sending these planes into some of the nastiest weather nature dishes out like the mph winds of Hurricane Gilbert in NOAA has never lost a ! P or a single member of its crew. I wouldn t say I enjoy getting beat up in hurricanes but it s not boring said NOAA Cmdr. Mark Nelson co pilot on our flight. We seldom see these aircraft in the Northwest. They and their crews are based in Tampa Fla. where hurricane hunting is routine business. But for the past few weeks this plane has been part of NOAA s Winter Storm Reconnaissance Program making flights over the Pacific from a temporary base in Portland. Our mission which occurred Friday was to get a close look at a band of weather headed toward the West Coast a system that could generate heavy rains this week as far away as Texas. To accomplish that our crew dropped cardboard covered cylinders at assigned points during the flight. As the tubes fell to earth transmitters inside sent back readings on temperature humidity pressure wind speed and direction. The results not only help shape National Weather Service forecasts they re being used in a new project to study atmospheric rivers bands of low level moisture with long term implications for! flooding snowpack and water resource management. Donning the survival suits had been a preflight exercise to make sure Times photographer Erika Schultz and I could manage them if necessary. As soon as we got them on we were allowed to take them off though they rode the entire flight in a bin near our seats bright orange reminders of what could happen. Just before departure NOAA Cmdr. Barry Choy the day s aircraft commander briefed the entire crew on what if scenarios and procedures. Virtually every object on the aircraft is either bolted strapped or tied down fire extinguishers cardboard boxes coffee urn binders full of paperwork. That dent on the overhead handrail We re told it was made by a life raft that wasn t secured when the plane hit a dip. This is no luxury vehicle. Plain metal cabinets panels and even the padding against the inside of the fuselage are all a government issue shade of yellow tan with plenty of nicks and scratches attesting to their use. Shortly afte! r takeoff Choy clicked off the fasten seat belt light and we could roam around the interior of the foot long plane watching the work of each of the nine crew members pilots flight engineers navigator meteorologists electronics technicians. About half were NOAA Corps officers the others were civilians. Seasoned hurricane hunters such as Steve Wade a flight engineer track not the number of flights they ve made but the number of penetrations into hurricanes and he has more than in his years with NOAA. A typical hurricane mission flies through the storm from several angles and at different altitudes. You get some serious updrafts and downdrafts. At times you feel weightless and if you weren t strapped in you end up in the overhead. . It can be pretty unnerving said Wade. Nelson told of a particularly harrowing flight last year in which three of the plane s four engines shut down about miles east of Newfoundland. On that mission with Nelson as commander heavy seas and severe updrafts carried enough sea salt up to the plane s foot elevation to coat ! the engine compressor blades choking the engines. In seven minutes the plane dropped more than feet and it was only about feet above the foot seas when it went through a heavy rain shower that rinsed away enough salt to let the engines be restarted. For a while I honestly thought we weren t going to make it he said. In comparison our mile flight out over the Pacific Ocean was a walk in the park. Only once did turbulence prompt Choy to click on the fasten seat belt sign sending everyone back to their seats to ride out a bumpy patch. At the heart of this mission was the work of Bill Olney an electronics technician who prepared dropped and monitored the inch long cylinders called GPS dropwindsondes or simply sondes from a French word for probe. Worth apiece but weighing less than a pound each of these cylinders which come wrapped in silver foil contains a small circuit board sensors and a little parachute to stabilize it as it falls. At assigned points Olney would unwrap a cyl! inder and place it in a tube leading out of the belly of the plane. With the flip of a switch a hatch would open and the low pressure outside would suck the sonde away with a whoosh. Shortly after each device left the plane Olney tracked its readings displayed as colored lines on a screen. Dropped from feet a sonde takes about eight minutes to hit the water sending back readings every half second. We watched the readings from one which showed winds drop from mph on high to mph at sea level. During that same fall the temperature rose from degrees below zero Fahrenheit to above. A blue line on the screen revealed the contents of the clouds below us The sonde reported a sharp increase in humidity from feet down to feet. Operating this aircraft costs between and an hour depending on its mission crew size equipment used fuel costs travel expenses and other variables. A hurricane flight which helps plot a storm s likely track can save some money for local governments since it s estimated to cost more than million per mile of coastline to prepare for! a major storm. But this is about more than money said Nelson. We feel we are absolutely saving lives he said. When we allow forecasters to make predictions about where a storm is going to go how long it s going to last and how strong its winds are they can get people safely out of its way. SkyPath Crusade Chapter 9

The SkyPath Crusade A Science Fiction Epic Poem Copyright by Daniel Schilling All Rights Reserved Far away from the moon where the council has just adjourned a lonely Roman sentry stands on the northern frontier of the habitable part of Mars. He sees a landing pod of sorts crash land in the frigid desert and he goes to investigate. He knows that this ship belongs to an enemy who must have snuck past the ether streams circling Mars at very high speeds in order to have escaped getting catapulted down by the Roman triremes protecting the planet. As he investigates the pod s escape hatch opens and a large hairy alien emerges. The alien and the Roman size each other up and prepare for combat. Chapter Nine Upon the Martian desert front A Roman sentry stood He watched the cold lands of the north And shivered in his hood He cooked a cautious meal with A faintly gleaming light While the purple skies above him Glimmered back their globes of white A glowing shell from heaven fell He gr! abbed his plated spear He crouched below a shelf of snow And perked an eager ear A gentle thud like falling mud Was all the noise he heard Except for quakes from seismic snakes And flittings of a bird The landing site was on his right A thousand meters hence The wind aloft was slow and soft Yet still the mood was tense Across the pocket cratered sand He crept on stealthy toes Prepared to tend a helpless friend Prepared to battle foes The landing pod was caked in sod The crashing point was deep The impact vector when it hit Was very fast and steep It fell so brisk it took the risk Of crashing into stone But with some luck instead it stuck Where healthy grass had grown The Roman soldier quick deduced The ship was not a friend This lonely spot was surely not An ether portal s end It seemed instead the craft had fled Attempting to sneak by The ether orbit up above Where Roman galleys fly The outer plate began to grate And opened up a hatch The spaceship s guide from down inside! Had just released the latch The Roman stared as something haired Began to apparate Its biped form was more than norm Its height was six foot eight The Roman in his ancient garb Removed his outer cloak He drew a sword without a word And faced the other bloke A plate of polished metal glit tered on his chiseled chest For his muscle bound exterior had Been primed to look its best The creature took his challenge and Proceeded to its spot While its lungs exuded vapors Filled with acid cooked and hot Then a plate of bony armor quick ly grew upon its fur As the tips protruded minerals That formed a deadly spur The Roman nodded to his foe But neither left his ground For both combatants took the time To quickly glance around The Martian breeze embraced the trees That dotted cratered dunes The stoic knight prepared to fight Beneath the double moons If you wish to read the entire SkyPath Crusade click here . North Texan! s seemed to be torn between playing in the snow or locking themselves inside the safety and heat of their home. The decision of many Flower Mound residents seemed clear as no one could be seen out and about in the downtown area. Beginning at p.m. the snow fell consistently for two hours and showed no signs of letting up. They remind me of cotton balls and they are falling slanted which tells you how hard the wind is blowing said CBS reporter Pam Harris. As of p.m. four to six inches of snow was reported in Denton County. Near the University of North Texas a mix of sand and snow caked the roadways. CBS Reporter Joel Thomas said the snow had been falling for four straight hours. It s scary since this is the first time I ve driven in snow said a motorist in Denton wearing a TWU sweatshirt. TiVos Predicts Weekly Idol Outcome

The title of the post is a bit long but it s a lot nicer than TiVo Predict s Idol Loser . That just sounds mean Week after week TiVo has been able to accurately predict who gets canned on the American Idol elimination shows.and tonight s victim is. SYESHA Full story At least it s not Brooke .phew I knew those votes would pay off. Syesha s singing her heart out Give her another chance Syesha s got a great voice but lately her song choices have been well less than fabulous. On Tuesday she sang a song by Fantasia who annoys the heck out of me. After trying to nail songs by power singers Whitney Houston and Whitney Houston she likes Whitney Syesha came up short according to the ever thoughful American Idol judges. Except for Paula. Paula thought Syesha did a bang up job and that she looked beautiful. AI Tip Paula gushes about how great someone looks when they do a lousy job. I especially like to watch Simon s reaction during these moments. Look at that goofy dreaded kid. Just po! sting this pic makes me smile. Now really people.Syesha What is wrong with us I feel guilty for not throwing a few votes Syesha s way. The real crime is the fact the goofy stoner kid Jason Castro and wanna be rocker Aussie Michael Johns are probably staying. Look I m glad that teeny boppers everywhere think J.C. s so hot he IS cute . However the fact he played a ukelele while singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow gives him a free pass until next week. I have to admit I like the kid though he s like a dumb loving dog that tugs at your heart. I just have to post a video of it sorry Syesha . We ll see if Syesha gets the boot but one thing we can predict without TiVo Kristy Lee Cook will most likely be in the Bottom .yet again. In cast it hasn t been apparent I LOVE BROOKE WHITE read why . Should Broke be sent home in one of those dreadful elimination ceremonies my support will immediate go to David Cook who rocks out and looks pretty hot while doing it . Brooke is not only a sing! er songwriter type she also plays piano and guitar. BTW on a side not does anyone else think it s weird that Kristy Lee Cook and David Cook have the same last name Post a Comment Name required E mail required URI All About Amy Sondova I m an writer photographer Christ follower and a trained counselor as well as creative force behind BackseatWriter.com . New Technology Keeps an Eye on Teen Drivers WJLATV Washington DC

New technology is offering parents a way to keep an eye on young drivers without having to ride in the car with them. The DriveCam system begins recording when it senses bad driving. It records video which is sent directly to parents over the internet. The camera captures accidents as they they happen. Example videos provided by the DriveCam show two teens involved in a rollover crash and a young driver crashing while using her cell phone. Any sudden movement activates the camera. The idea is to show drivers their risky behavior in order to change it. It s even used as a tool by the local driver s education program I Drive Smart. DriveCam has examined more than three million mishaps to look for common mistakes drivers make when getting in an accident. They company found most accidents happen at intersections when drivers follow too closely speeding and distractions including cell phones. A Virginia Tech study of drivers in the D.C. area shows crash risk is increased by almos! t three times when dialing a hand held phone and by almost one and half times when just talking on the phone. But the company found the biggest problem is drivers not wearing seat belts. DriveCam shows one cab driver being tossed into the backseat and partly out a window because he wasn t wearing his. About two thirds of the adults and about three quarters of the kids who get in accidents are unbelted said Bruce Moller of DriveCam. The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute is taking a look at the risky behavior behind teen driving. The study s results are expected later this year. Create a Domain Base Profile for All Users

Zero touch installs have always fascinated me but spending big bucks to do it isn t always an option. I m not out to provide away of doing this but I am developing some ideas. Some of my posts may contain information that will not be used but I ve found it relevant. Providing a base profile for users can be accomplished numerous ways. This is just one of them. Create a profile and configure it how you want it setup. Then under the Advanced tab in the System applet select User Profiles. Select the user profile you just setup and select Copy to set the appropriate permissions the netlogon share. Then rename the folder to Default User. ref If you want to setup Mandatory profiles copy the profile in the same way to a folder called Mandatory. Rename Ntuser.dat to Ntuser.man. In AD Users and Computers select the users properties and set the Profile Path to the Mandatory folder. ref ip No Comment No comments yet Posting your comment. Al Gore is Waiting

Al Gore is Waiting March pm R.D. Walker Politics U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney says we may not be past the possibility of a President Gore. If it the nomination process goes into the convention don t be surprised if someone different is at the top of the ticket Mahoney said. A compromise candidate could be someone such as former vice president Al Gore Mahoney said last week during a meeting with this news organization s editorial board. If either Clinton or Obama suggested to a deadlocked convention a ticket of Gore Clinton or Gore Obama the Democratic Party would accept it Mahoney said. This could get interesting.
