Title

Derrick Walker. Photo by Bob Heathcote. The possible merger now appears to be on hold while new rumors of CCWS moving toward bankruptcy protection have surfaced. We ve been hearing those rumors since Friday and as we ve continued to say our doors are open and people are working CCWS Executive Vice President Communications David Higdon told the Associated Press. We re proceeding with our plans and will keep operating as Champ Car. The two top American based open wheel series have had discussions in the past that led nowhere. Will they again Or this time will they come to some sort of agreement for the future The future does not need to be tomorrow or even this year but it could happen in once details are worked out and a firm schedule combining race venues. If the merger does happen for the season others from track owners to promoters to the chassis and engine manufacturers could lose out financially. In the current economy that is never a good sign. For one man planning for ! the future no matter what happens is foremost in his mind. With over years of experience in auto racing from Formula One to the former Championship Auto Racing Teams CART and to the IRL Derrick Walker has been there and seen it all. In his statement to the fans of open wheel racing on his website www.walkerracing.com Walker stated Over the last couple of days there has been a lot of speculation as to what is happening with Champ Car and Walker Racing Team Australia. We are sure that the fans have heard and read a lot of the rumors that are circulating about Champ Car and we thought it was important to give them a little perspective on Walker Racing s point of view about the issue of the potential merger and our current status. Currently Walker is a team owner in the Atlantic series and co team owner with Craig Gore and John Fish in Champ Car Team Australia . Last year the Aussie Vineyards team driver Will Power finished fourth in the Champ Car final standings. On Feb. th Go! re announced that he was closing the doors of his WPS WOW Racing team in the Australia V Supercar Series but made it clear that the Champ Car team was still on the books for . Will Power leads at the start. Photo by Troy Hart. Per the press release Gore also remains committed to his Team Australia motorsport program and driver Will Power in the Champ Car World Series in the United States where Team Australia is backed by Gore s Australian wine export company Aussie Vineyards and its Au brand. Recently Walker Racing took part in the Atlantic open test at Sebring with drivers Kevin Lacroix and the two Mansell brothers Greg and Leo. Yet his Champ Car team was a no show only a few days before for the Champ Car portion of the test. The rookie driver for Team Australia Simon Pagenaud was in Sebring testing for Conquest Racing. It makes all the sense to pull both series together and that s obviously been tried many times before and now there has been a lot of discussion about the possibility of it happening again. However there is great difficulty in! being able to pull those series together at this time of the year for IRL or Champ Car said Walker in his open letter to the fans. Due to his business acumen and life long commitment to have an active role in motor sports it is no surprise that he would consider making a return appearance to the IRL fielding at least one car in the IndyCar Series. Walker alluded to the team s possible plans From a Walker Racing standpoint Craig Gore my partner in Team Australia has expressed many times to continue his involvement in the Team Australia program with Will Power whether it is in Champ Car or in a merged series. As of yet those plans are on hold until we know what is happening with the potential merger. Our interest in the IRL was formulated sometime ago. We looked at the possibility to run two open wheel series cars in our facility again . So the idea of running in the IRL is not a new concept for us and is not a concept that was born out of that fact that there would be a mer! ger or that Champ Car could disappear he resolved. Sarah Fisher. Photo by indyracing.com Ron McQueeney. Walker has moved his way up the ladder from mechanic to team owner. He has seen the best of times and the worst of times. Through it all the Scotsman kept forging ahead always looking at what the future might hold. Many forget that Walker already has ties with the IRL including with his former boss Roger Penske. During his tenure with Penske including a vice president role when the team was with CART Walker helped lead the team along with the Captain to five championships and five Indianapolis wins. In Walker Racing fielded a car in the IRL for rookie Sarah Fisher. She became the third woman to qualify for the Indy that year. Fisher also led nine laps at Kentucky before finishing third her best finish in her debut season. The following year Walker and Fisher earned their best career finish at Homestead Miami. The second place finish went into the record books as the best result by a woman in either the IRL or Champ Car. The record has been t! ied but not yet broken. During those same two years Walker Racing also continued to compete in Champ Car. If he does both again this year it truly is not too much of a challenge for Walker. He obviously is disappointed with the continuation of the open wheel racing split but at the same time he looks toward the future. In his release to the fans on his website Walker commented The future for open wheel racing is somewhat uncertain but the encouraging sign is that all parties are talking. There is nothing that seems to be off of the table at the moment. It s just an awkward time where everyone is on hold and the media is trying to get the story out there to the fans but it s too premature to be able to tell the story because the discussions really have to be finished before everyone in the IRL and Champ Car know what potentially could happen. If Champ Car continues on and we have the funding it s very likely that Team Australia would continue and it s also quite possible tha! t we could successfully secure sponsorship for the IRL and have an IRL program as well. Derrick Walker and Simon Pagenaud. Photo by Bob Heathcote. Will Walker Racing be putting too many eggs in the basket if he does all three series Only time will tell but due to his making his thoughts public he obviously felt that the fans of open wheel racing are important to the team. Walker was very clear on not wanting to appear in the middle of the two series and their discussions in his online statement My last comment from a Walker Racing perspective we are a small specialized company running in open wheel racing. We are non political. We see open wheel racing as open wheel racing and we go where our business leads us. If it s in two series or if it s better for the business to be in one series then we will be where we can get the corporate support to be able to keep racing. Thank you for your support as fans and we will do our best to keep you all posted. Discuss this article in the Motorsport.com Forums channel IRL CHAMPCAR . The game was fantastic. As you all know I work for a company in New York with lots of fun loving Giants fans. I am a massive Vikings fan but I do admit a soft spot for them Giants. During the first quarter it was apparent that the Patriots were going to get man handled by the giant and darn quick defensive line of the Giants. I was really surprise at the offensive line of the Patriots falling apart. Kudos to Eli and the Giants. My family and I attended the NFL Experience at the stadium the day before. The experience was eye opening and tiresome for mom and dad. The kids enjoyed the fun food and sun. Ban junk food ads on kidsapos TV aposor elseapos

Welcome to PerthNow. Skip to Search Box Section Navigation Network Navigation Content View the Sitemap NEWS.com.au FOX SPORTS CLASSIFIEDS MOBILE Network Highlights News Sport AFL Basketball Rugby Union Cricket Racing Motor Sport Soccer Tennis Beijing Olympics Business We would prefer the ban to be imposed nationally and we would prefer the industries involved to take their own action but the State Government has sought legal advice on a state ban and the advice we have is that we can push ahead with legislation to introduce an SA ban as a last resort he said. With SA figures showing one in five of our state s four year olds are either overweight or obese and similar figures across Australia these big companies need to take action and be part of the campaign to stop the escalating obesity crisis. I want them to drop junk food and drink advertising in children s television and if they fail to do this the State Government is prepared to go it alone and introduce our own ban on ! these ads if all else fails. Mr Hill said the ban could be based on a model being implemented in the UK. All advertisements in Britain for foods that contain high salt sugar and fat content during children s programming will be banned from next year. Mr Hill said junk food advertisements often led to bad eating habits among children. We know that parents are very worried about the impact of these ads and the influence they have on children he said. Parents are particularly worried that these ads influence the way children spend their pocket money when they are unsupervised by adults. Parents are also affected by what we call pester power the ability of children to influence what goes in the supermarket trolley through intensive pestering of their parents. A Health Department survey conducted last year showed per cent of people believed there was too much advertising for unhealthy food during children s TV programs. Another survey conducted in NSW revealed junk food advertis! ements were shown each hour during children s television times. Don t worry It s fairly spam proof. By Paul Swider Times Staff Writer Published February ADVERTISEMENT Visitors to V s Martini Bar in Clearwater have their fingers on the pulse of st century marketing coming soon to a cell phone near you if you haven t seen it. It works great said Vincenzo Longo the bar s owner who for a year has been using text message marketing to tell his clients what s new at the V. Nobody complains and it s cost effective. Longo sends sho! rt messages to the cell phones of about of his customers once or twice a week telling them about drink specials or upcoming events. Sometimes they get a coupon for a free drink. At cents per message it doesn t take too many customers buying that second drink for Longo to get his money back. While European and Asian cell phone users have let advertisers send information to their mobile phones for years the practice is only now catching on in the United States. Many heard their phones chime with offers during Sunday s Super Bowl and the dam is about to burst on what some research says will be a multibillion dollar channel in the next few years. Sending text messages to hundreds of people at a time is more than thumbs can bear so companies like Tampa s Agile Communications provide Web interfaces to simplify the process. They maintain databases of customers who have given permission so as not to run afoul of the law or good customer service by cell spamming the unsuspecting. Longo uses Agile which serves text messages to patrons of the Tampa Bay P! erforming Arts Center the Florida Aquarium and the Museum of Science and Industry said chief operating officer Rick Bowen. He said text is being applied in many novel ways from emergency notifications to political organizing. As the industry moves to unlimited messaging the practice will only grow. It s almost impossible today to buy a cell phone package without unlimited text messaging said Bowen who cites research that million messages are sent in the United States every day and that number is doubling annually. Pizza and other fast food chains are pushing hard on this form of mobile marketing. Domino s has million cell phone numbers on its list to which it sends promotions about once a month. Pizza Hut is gearing up while Papa John s has an NFL playoff promotion that gears discounts to points scored but only for those signed up to its text service. Imagine you re sitting there on Super Bowl Sunday and you get a text message with a pizza special said Jenn Greacen head of ! Red Frog Marketing of Largo which is working with pizza places and other clients on rolling out text based services. Greacen said she has seen the service used by hotels to notify conventioners about a schedule change or a new event. She has heard of bars and restaurants developing speed dating activities around text messaging. She s talking to a home improvement client who wants to have billboards that include a code people can text for information and discounts. Cox Cable is experimenting in some markets with a similar service only the codes are shown on TV ads. Text message marketing doesn t work in all cases. Bella Brava in downtown St. Petersburg tried texting coupons but didn t get many takers. It was a little complicated for our customers and required them to do too much owner Robert Sanderson said. But Sanderson changed tactics and uses texts to tell people about exclusive events. He sent out a message about a limited space free wine tasting and his phone started ringing. We d rather move toward announcements he said than try to get so! meone to come in to save . Text message marketing has been slow to catch on in this country in part because of the bad experiences people have had with e mail said Mark Wenzow ski president and CEO of new Tampa firm Cellghost Media. But unlike wide open e mail text messaging has stricter controls to prevent abuse. It s actually a very passive form of marketing because you have to opt in and in some cases double opt in he said referring to users asking to receive messages not just having them come unsolicited. The standards of wireless carriers and the Mobile Marketing Association make it easy to opt out when users change their minds. It s a much more airtight system Wenzowski said. Some scams slip through. Though permission is required some third party companies sign up customers covertly and charge them monthly fees for things like daily text jokes. The wireless industry is clamping down on such deals and hoping to fend off federal regulation. With the variety of text mark! eting applications growing some describe it as the Wild West One firm invites people to send a camera phone picture of print ads in exchange for a discount on merchandise mentioned in the ad. Dentists use text messages to remind their patients of appointments. Virgin Mobile USA offers its customers free cell phone minutes if they ll accept text message ads. Half a million people have accepted the offer. Wenzowski is giving service to his church for a monthly text prayer and targeting real estate agents who want to text instant info on homes for sale as shoppers drive by. Agile made text messaging available to adventurer Roz Savage when she rowed across the Atlantic Ocean in Bowen said. People who wanted to follow her progress would get messages she sent via satellite phone from the middle of the sea to countries. Leukemia patient Pat Pedraja used text messages to keep people informed about his progress around the country last year as he raised money for and awareness of bone marrow transplants. With text messages you can t ignore them Greacen ! said. People are about to see a lot of it. Paul Swider can be reached at pswidersptimes.com or . Dr. Twumasi said although the community health nurses and the other medical personnel did their best during the floods they could not cover all areas due to inadequate staff logistics and supervision. He said to address these constraints the MOH was in the process of training staff on reproductive health with special emphasis on antenatal care and contraceptive update and to also galvanise district health communities to carry out more maternal deaths audits. He said the MOH would also among others organise operation research on low update of reproductive health services and intensify facilitative supervision to districts and sub districts. She said several acr! es of farmlands were destroyed submerged or total washed away while fishing and farming came to a standstill. She said diseases such as malaria and diarrhoea were common while the black fly attacked the people because of the closeness of the district to the Black Volta. Mrs. Daison said there was also the fear of the spread of communicable diseases because of overcrowding and children were also malnourished and had stopped going to school. She also expressed concern about the activities of quack doctors and nurses who took advantage of the people and were given wrong medication to them further worsening their plight.
