Sector Snap Virtualization Technology AP via Yahoo Finance

While the impact of virtualization technology may already be moderating growth in the server market its impact on desktops won t be significantly felt until at least Lehman Brothers analyst Tim Luke said Tuesday. Virtualization technology allows a computer to split its power among more than one operating system essentially enabling the computer to act as multiple machines. The technology is already being used in the server market where it is seen as a way to do more with fewer machines. In a note to clients Luke called virtualization s impact on the server market profound predicting it will be used in up to half of x Windows and Linux servers by . He estimated only . percent of those servers were virtualized at the end of . With x server units growing just percent in versus a percent compound annual growth rate over the prior three years we believe virtualization has already begun to impact server unit growth the analyst wrote. As for the mainstream desktop market Luke forecast the virtualization trend there may remain subdued in the near term. According to the analyst the economic case for desktop virtualization allowing users to run Windows on an Apple Inc. Mac computer for example is not as compelling. He also cited user reluctance. Luke estimated about percent of desktops will be virtualized by and percent by . However Luke said that the virtualization of individual desktop applications as opposed to entire operating systems may see better traction in the medium term. Among chip makers Luke said that Advanced Micro Devices Inc. s Direct Connect Architecture positions the company well in the market for virtualized servers.
